I just recently started composting. Uh, well…. Since I haven’t been doing it long enough yet to have produced any actual compost, I guess it’s more like I’m just saving discarded food in a box in the yard, adding dirt or water or yard clippings to it every once in a while, and stirring it [...]

Plants Are My Crack

Broke down yesterday and bought a lovely, large potted Endless Summer Hydrangea and a large potted Bleeding Heart. D convinced me not to toss the tiny and mostly dead All Summer Beauty starter into the compost bin – he suggested cutting down the growth, planting it in a pot, and babying it for a bit [...]
Rainy Day Doo

Spent a half hour picking up dog turds in the rain. Then made D take an oath with me: We will never let more than 2 days pass without going out on Poo Patrol.
April Gardening

I got a little too excited about my landscaping projects, and I ordered over 60 plants a few weeks ago. Mercifully, they didn’t all ship at the same time. I did get about 40 of them a couple of weeks ago, though, so I had several days of furious soil cultivating, hole digging, planting, and [...]
Farewell, Roses

Over the weekend, we dug out the 4 rosebushes in our front yard. A couple of them seemed quite old and well-established. There was digging, hacking, pulling, bending, and perhaps just a little cursing. But they’re out, finally. I have to admit, I don’t really get “rose people.” I mean, I admire their passion for [...]
10 Days, No Pee on Floor

I feel a little superstitious about even typing this, but it’s been 10 days since Oscar the Puppy last peed on the floor. Yeay! waving fists triumphantly Now, if he could figure out how to bathe himself, we’d really be in business. Unfortunately, though, he’s regurgitated his breakfast the past 2 mornings. Upon visual examination, [...]
Proud Puppy Parent

I’ve been a new puppy mom for 2 weeks now, and good god, I question whether I would have it in me to bear and raise a human child. The funny thing is, the new pooch – Oscar – is a really, really good dog. He’s good-tempered, friendly but not wild, very calm as puppies [...]
The Miracle of Geometry

A pencil, a tape measure, a level, 9 nails, a step stool, 30 minutes, and a whole lotta measuring, calculating, remeasuring, and recalculating (and just a bit of cursing). Ta da! I love everything about these pieces – the color palette, the patterns, the pewter frames. I saw them in Ballard Designs and knew they’d [...]
Super-Efficient Grocery Shopping

I love efficiency. In my mind, if you’re doing something the inefficient way, you’re doing it the wrong way (and that’s only a bit of hyperbole, there). Grocery shopping – not exactly my favorite way to spend Sunday evening. So I’m all for anything that makes it faster. I keep a steno pad on the [...]
Good for Wood

Sounds like a new website for your naughty self-portraits, but it’s not. It’s a product in Method’s floor care line, and it smells freakin awesome – like almonds. Really clean almonds. Plus, it’s biodegradable and non-toxic. A little pricey, but I’m in love with this stuff!
